Zipper Pull Size Guide

Zipper Pull Size Guide — Does Size Really Matter?

Yes. Every zipper has a number and that number determines which slider fits. Using the wrong size means the pull will not attach properly or will jam and break. Here is what you need to know.

How Zipper Sizes Work

The number refers to the approximate width of the zipper teeth in millimeters when closed. A #3 zipper has 3mm teeth, a #5 zipper has 5mm teeth, and so on. The larger the number, the heavier and more durable the zipper.

Size #2 — Ultra Fine
Teeth width: 2mm. The finest and most delicate zipper size. Rarely seen in everyday products. Used on high-end fashion garments, lingerie, fine leather goods and couture pieces where the zipper must be nearly invisible.

Size #3 — Fine and Lightweight
Teeth width: 3mm. The go-to size for lightweight garments. Common on dresses, skirts, trousers, jeans side seams, pencil cases, small wallets and coin pouches. If your zipper looks slim and delicate, it is most likely a #3.

Size #4 — Light to Medium
Teeth width: 4mm. Less common than #3 and #5 but found on some lightweight bags, casual jackets and children's clothing. Sits between fine garment zippers and everyday bag zippers.

Size #5 — Everyday Standard
Teeth width: 5mm. The most widely used size across fashion and accessories. Found on handbags, backpacks, purses, jackets, hoodies, cosmetic bags and luggage compartments. When in doubt, check your bag — it is probably a #5.

Size #7 — Medium Heavy
Teeth width: 7mm. A step up from #5, used on heavier bags, winter coats, boots and some luggage. Less common but still widely used in outerwear and footwear.

Size #8 — Heavy Duty
Teeth width: 8mm. Built for high-load applications such as large luggage, outdoor gear, tents, sofa cushion covers and workwear. The hardware feels noticeably heavier and thicker.

Size #10 — Extra Heavy Duty
Teeth width: 10mm. The heaviest standard zipper size for consumer use. Found on large luggage, heavy-duty outdoor equipment, industrial bags, horse gear and maritime products. The teeth and slider are visibly large and very robust.

Size #15 and above — Industrial
Teeth width: 15mm or wider. Rarely seen in everyday consumer products. Used in industrial applications, safety equipment, protective gear and specialty military or maritime use.

How to Identify Your Zipper Size

Look on the back of your existing zipper slider — the size number is often stamped directly onto the metal. If the number has worn off, measure the width of the closed teeth with a ruler in millimeters and match it to the sizes above.
